PraxisDialog: Liaoning FAQ
1. What kind of market-oriented technological products and services MAN Roland will offer to target the printing industry in the Northeast region?
- To put it simply, we will recommend a standard four-color press (because of the high demand for four-color printing in the market) and a five-color press plus inline coating for publishing and commercial printing because they can add values to the printed products. For packaging printing, customers can consider inline “5+1”, “6+1” or UV technology, or even a large-format multi-color press. These configurations are not common in the three Northeast provinces. They should be able to gain a market share.
2. If I want to raise the speed of a ROLAND 700 from 16,000 sheets per hour to 17,000 sheets per hour, can I make adaptations after the installation or should I simply make up my mind on the speed during purchase?
- It is difficult to make alterations once the press is installed. Customers need to decide which speed to use when placing an order.
3. China-made printing presses have been gaining a substantial share in the market with their printing quality recognized by their customers. They are now seeking to enter into the international market. Professor Zhao Zhiqiang of Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication once mentioned that their printing quality still lags behind that of other world-renowned brands. Is this a common phenomenon among all China-made presses or it is just the problem of a particular kind of product?
- I should say that these few years we have seen a continuous improvement in the quality of China-made printing supplies. The high market demand and the intense competition between market rivals have stimulated the advancement of printing technology, especially sheetfed small offset printing supplies for quarto size printing or below. But there is still a gap in the product and printing quality between the made-in-China brands and imported best-known brands. Most of the China-made products serve the low-end and mid-range market. As one of the global market leaders in sheetfed offset printing supplies, MAN Roland offers these products with first-class quality. Ideal for publishing, packaging and commercial printing, they win word-of-mouth reputation for their outstanding performance. Therefore, MAN Roland’s printing supplies still enjoy competitive advantages in the high-end market which looks for high-quality products.
4. What is so special about the design ideals and the market positioning of MAN Roland’s printing presses?
- All the MAN Roland’s presses, be it a quarto ROLAND 500 press, a folio ROLAND 700 press or a full-size R900 press, adopt a modular connection design, such as the “7 o’ clock” cylinder geometry, the double diameter impression cylinder and the Transferters function, cylinders in a horizontal line and an independent cable system, etc. MAN Roland targets the high-and-medium end market.
5. Do you think printers in the Liaoning region need to use five-color presses or to install new configurations to enhance their competitiveness?
- ROLAND 705 with an inline coating system (ICS) is what I recommend. This new model can serve as a standard five-color press, as well as a CMYK four color plus special color printing press, or act as a “four plus one” model to perform four colors plus coating to replace offline coating or laminating. This is in fact a three-in-one printing press.
6. What is the volume growth in publishing and commercial printing at present in the three Northeast provinces? Is there a gap between the two?
- The three Northeast provinces form the old industrial base of China and also the old base for publishing printing. With the advanced development of new media, the traditional publishing industry, however, has been slowing down with decreased growth in production value and profits. Even in the nation’s 11th Five Year Plan, the growth rate of publishing printing is only forecasted at 3 %. With the rapid development of the three Eastern provinces, there will be a surge in demand for commercial printing which will have a better development prospect. Therefore, to adapt to the current restructuring in the printing industry and the economic development of the three Eastern provinces, printers need to shift their focus from publishing printing to commercial printing.
7. Does the local government have support measures to help Shenyang printers raise their printing technology and production standards? Is the policy directed at big enterprises or other high-tech enterprises?
- The printing industry has been recognized as a service industry, metropolis industry and culture industry by big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. It has been viewed as a key industry for support and development. Since Shenyang is a political, economic and cultural center of the three Eastern provinces, the Shenyang government has attached great importance to the printing industry in its development blueprint with plans to formulate policies to help printing enterprises raise their technology and production standards. This support policy will help not only the big enterprises, but also other high-tech enterprises. It will encourage the state-run enterprises to restructure and strengthen their businesses and the small and medium size enterprises to apply new technology so that they can all raise their technological standards and printing quality with their unique competitive advantages.
8. What is the largest format size and maximum speed of ROLAND 700 HiPrint?
- ROLAND 700 HiPrint can produce the largest format of 740 x 1040 mm. You can pick the 780 x 1050 mm one. The press runs at a maximum speed of 16,000 sheets per hour. You can install the speed at 17,000 sheets per hour.
